Things I am actively participating in currently

The following is an attempt to compile all the activities I am currently actively participating in:

Philosophy Single Honours, BA - I am in my final year at the University of Southampton
Utility Warehouse - An ongoing business interest.

Circuit Training - I've been attending circuits as often as I can during term time now.

Linux, Ubuntu, 8 (aka Hardy Heron) - I have been using Ubuntu Linux instead of Windows since November 2007.

What I do, or have done, in my spare time

I have tried to dedicate the following post to the section in one's C.V. normally called 'Other Interest'.

Fish on Toast, President (2008-2009)
- the University of Southampton's entrepreneurs society. My role as the president is to over see the successful running of the society. This role is a highly managerial one, that requires an ability to manage both my own time, the time of those that work alongside of me, as well as, directing the society in its expansion and ever increasing status before various members of the business and academic community.
To find out more please feel free to visit our website: www.fishontoast.com, or visit the university's Student Enterprise section.

Newman Society, President (2005-2006)
-Shrewsbury School's Philosophy Society.

Fish on Toast, Social Chair (2007-2008)
- the University of Southampton's entrepreneurs society.

Shrewsbury Rounders Tournament (2005)
- upon my hearing the school would begin to soon admit girls, I decided to start an annual rounders tournament. The first year had just teams of boys playing each other (a surprisingly hard task to pull off, at an all boys school)

Drama
- I have performed in 8 different plays, assuming roles such as Toad in, 'Toad of Toad Hall' to Cassius in 'Julius Caesar'.

Sport
- I have participated in school teams for the following; Football, Hockey, Rowing, Squash and Cricket.
- I also have (or had) an active participation in the following: Tae-kwon-do, Break Dancing and Rounders

Miscellaneous Qualifications and Awards

The following is an assortment of the different qualifications that I have picked up over the years.

Volunteering: Young Enterprise

Young Enterprise, (2007-present)
Southampton
As part of my involvement in Fish on Toast, the University of Southampton's entrepreneurs society, I was encouraged to become an advisor for Young Enterprise in a local school.

Although, I got my criminal records check (CRB) in late 2006, I was never invited to attend at the school that I was designated to. Having been frustrated at this inefficiency, I insisted on getting involved early on with a different school in 2007.

Southampton City College, became my designated school, where I worked along side a link teacher, leading a class of around ten, 17 year-old school kids. My task was to help them start and make a success of any business idea that they agreed upon (getting everyone agreed on the plan was probably the second hardest thing to achieve, after deciding who would be CEO). Belatedly, we started a t-shirt printing company ('Say It Like It Is'). The idea was to specialise in printing amusing typical school slang onto t-shirts in big, brightly coloured, bold fonts.

Once a week my job, was to guide and motivate the students into starting their own business. Without wishing to sound cliche, I must admit to being overwhelmed by their fantastic enthusiasm and diversity of characters. It was certainly a very eye opening experience for me having not attended a state school. Over all my experience was very positive, and Young Enterprise, is something, ideally, I would like to continue for as long as possible.

I am not however currently involved with Young Enterprise due to my being in my final year and the work piling on.

Work Experience: Wealth Management

Clist Financial Management, (2006)
Dorset

Dealing mainly with the job of wealth management (amongst other things such as property development), Clist Financial Management has various finance related operations.

My time at Clist Financial Management, was mainly consumed with research into various stocks, shares and investments vehicles via the Standard and Poors, website.

Overall, my experience of Clist of Financial Management, was interesting and I gained a greater understanding of the world of finance. It was also made clear to me the importance of trust needed between any financial advisor and their cleint.

Work Experience: Alternative Fuels

South West Biofuels, (2007)
Dorset

Resulting from a personal interest in the bio-fuel industry, I took it upon myself to find a local producer and supplier of bio-fuels. SWBF, produce and supply bio-fuels mostly produced from waste vegetable oils and rapeseed oil.

My job whilst there, was to identify and develop new business. Using a range of resources from internet research, previous market research done by the company, consults by lecturers at Bath University and information gathered from calling various manufacturers such as Ford, Mercedes-Benz and DAF. My greatest success was creating a lead for SWBF at Bristol International Airport, potentially worth around over £600,000.00 .

Working at SWBF was very enjoyable and enlightening due to the small workforce. This allowed me to spend valuable time with the senior management, discussing both the industry and future plans for the company. I was also privileged enough to escort the MD to Bath University, for a meeting with their top alternative fuels researchers.

Work Experience: Defence Industry

Westland Helicopters (2005)
Somerset

Westlands, is a helicopter manufacterer based in Yeovil, Somerset. Their most notable helicopters include the Lynx, Sea King and Gazelle, as well as having some involvement in the servicing of Apache helicopters.

My time was spent in the Programming section. The Programming department, is concerned with managing the overall construction of the helicopters made. Part of their role is providing reasonable forecasts for the likely delivery of contracts.

Some of my time at Westlands was spent learning about the different functions of the company (as well as being blown away by some of the jobs, such as the test pilots). This lead to me meeting various people from lawyers, accountants, engineers, test pilots and human resource managers.
I was very impressed by the company and by the scale of what they did. However, I was shocked to find out whilst there that the 'on time and on budget contract' is something of a rarity within their industry (due to long lead times and the changing requirements of the helicopters on order).

Work Experience: My own company, Clubsoton

Clubsoton Limited (established March 2007)
Southampton

Having attended a number of Fish on Toast (the University of Southampton's entrepreneur society) gatherings, learning about the many dynamic issues concerning becoming an entrepreneur, I finally decided to try my hand at it

Clubsoton is an idea that was born to some extent out of frustration. As a first year student, it was increasingly becoming apparent that I was not informed well enough as to where to go out on any one night. The fundamental idea behind the company is to facilitate going out in Southampton, as best as possible.

Although the website has existed for sometime, and we have made many enquires, the company as such has not been launched yet. Our launch party is planned for early February, 2008.

I am one of three directors of the company. So far, my role has been one of co-ordinating our overall efforts. This has required me to carry out various roles, from facilitating the efforts of the programming, to meeting potential clients, briefing them about the idea and selling them the idea.

For more information about Clubsoton itself, please click through our brochure.

I believe that the overall experience of having been involved in clubsoton (for what is nearing a majority of my time at university) has greatly instilled in me the value of time and good management of it, as well as increased my confidence in presenting myself and my unproven idea to strangers (be they club owners, managers or friends). It has also opened my eyes as to the great diversity of professionalism that can exist between different business and people.

Work Experience: Advertising - Euro RSCG

Euro RSCG London, (2008)

Euro RSCG is a top ten above the line advertising agency. It is also part of the Havas world wide communications network. They work with brands as diverse as The Sun, Peugeot, Cillit Bang, Citroen, Air France, The Conservatives, and many more.

I spent 7 weeks over July and August as an intern in their London office. My role was to help out on anything that required doing (from spray mounting ads to create posters, to finding songs for their next advert, or attending radio ad recordings for The Sun). Due to the erratic nature of excess work (its always hard to tell which accounts will require an extra hand) I made the decision to get to know as many of the people in the agency as possible, so that I could maintain my work load.

This resulted in my working with lots of different people in the agency (as well as getting involved in the softball team, check out the team photo!). And so I have worked in both Planning and Account Handling as well as done some minor work for the New Business department.

I greatly enjoyed my time at Euro. It not only solidified my resolve to work in the advertising industry, but also gave me a great insight into the work that goes on in an agency of its size and importance.
